We were talking about obtuse angles in math class, and I thought: Why do I associate an obtuse angle with "large" and not "small"? Then I realized that one's mind makes strange connections between seemingly unrelated ideas. Take the word obtuse, for example. The letter "o" gives me a feeling of chubbiness. The syllable "tuse" sounds like the Chinese character "凸"(tū), meaning sticking out. Obtuse even sounds like certain words, like obese and open. The similar sounding word oblong, for example, contains the word long. Through making connections, the mind gives words their meanings.
